PROFESSIONAL SKILLS & CAREER PATHS

"Working very hard to be internationally active in an avant-garde manner"
-(Yayoi Kusama 1966)

That becomes my motto, and also is my goal in my career path.

Critical reflection on professional toolkit session: Lan Monroe
Art and Money, the many paths to a sustainable practice

In my case, artists are exempt from the career rule. It means there are numerous other paths that I can endeavors. For example, I can sell my artworks, I can run a studio that could collaborate with others in other to tender for the big project, e.g. project which relevant to working on films, relevant to the public installation.....

Art is the world of inclusive and sustainable development; it has a variety of interdisciplinary possibilities. For this reason, I could borrow materials and theories from other fields of art and culture to practice my concepts and topics, including literature, social theory, film, philosophy, politics, technology, and so on.

That is to say, I need to continue learning and trying new things. I completely agree with Moroe's opinion:" Your path is individual." I don't need to panic and be rush to sell my artworks and become a mature artist. Keep creating, keep practicing, keep learning, keep trying; maybe this is the only way to go step by step to success.

According to the above table of career plans which I wrote down after carefully thinking after this session, I will critically reflect on my Ph.D. application and my future creation and professional career paths.

1. Ph.D. Application:

I separate three main parts to analyze the failure of my Ph.D. application: research proposal, portfolio, and interview.

Research proposal:

In summary, there are two main shortages in my research. Firstly, my literature review lacks analysis and comparison of the pieces of literature. I had to make a list and describe some pieces of literature in my research proposal, but I have not summarized their similarities and differences. In addition, there are not enough evaluations about their merits and demerits are

Second, my methodology lacks rigour and innovation. I need to design a suitable method to avoid some bias, effort to overcomes those problems that I questioned in my research.

Portfolio:

Owing to the limited time before I submitted my Ph.D. application for RCA, I had to show them my old portfolio, which I have done in my bachelor's degree. So, next time I will recreate a new portfolio and select the artworks with care. My artworks need to be based on my research or support each other. Because my practice is a method to help me question the problem or phenomenon which we face in our lives, from an artistic perspective. It is an important part in my research.

Interview:

I prepared a long presentation draft for my interview.  I tried to remember each sentence in my interview. But what happened is that there is so much content that I cannot remember and the interviewer has not mentioned the content that I prepared. So I understand it is better to remember a structure rather than remember each sentence of your interview draft now.

2. Future creation

My future creation will effort to two aspects: the innovation of creative forms and the innovation of media.

1. I will keep trying cutting-edge technology, and combine my creation to find a unique artistic creation language that belongs to my identity. For example, I master Chinese painting, and I am a person who likes to try and explore high-tech and digital technologies. These are my characteristics, and I hope I can express my characteristics through my works.

2. Explore and try various media materials for my creation, e.g. chemical materials, textile media, virtual and physical media etc.

After a year of study and practice at UAL, I found my creative style. I find that I like to use surrealism way to create content that blends reality and illusion. Art creation gives me the ability to face my impulse and implement new ideas.

3. Professional career paths

I am honoured that my work has been selected for the CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021 exhibition. That will be held in Venice, at ITSLIQUID Art Space from October 15 to November 05, 2021.

I tried to apply for a lot of opportunities to participate in the exhibition, and there were successful and failed experiences. I will always try because only try it then you will have a chance.

In these processes, I kept reflecting on myself and transformed from thinking as a student to thinking like a professional artist. For example, there are two shortcomings that I found myself:
1. There is no professional personal website
2. Did not write a more professional biography

Efforts to become more professional will increase the chance of being selected in the exhibition and be seen by more people.
